Inspired by plants

This week I’m growing the same herbs (basil, marjoram, rosemary), garlic, tulips, and carrots. I dropped the lights. I’m letting my broccoli flower and go to seed. I’m clearing space for starting more seeds. I’ll start my fancy potatoes this week as the eyes have been getting bigger in the dark. I realized I need a lot more lights. But I’m also grateful to live in NC for now because I’m leaning towards moving my seed starting outdoors. I collected a few buckets of maple leaves for composting. False Spring came and went and now it’s rainy. I love the rain because it’s less work in the garden. I love the rain because of how it smells. I love the rain because it’s slightly less sunny out.

Inspired by people

When we place systems like grocery stores, schools, medical, recreation, so far away from each other, we tend to stretch ourselves thin. When we only rely on those systems rather than our neighbors, we might find that we wasted a whole trip to the store. That trip to the store rather than a walk to a door is a missed opportunity for a shared meal, a new friend, a connection.

I admire when roads are shut down for Army runs. Yes it is also annoying for cars BUT the opportunity is a win-win: commuters get to take the scenic route, adjust their time expectations, or just enjoy watching; runners work out and work with each other. Outside of the military base, similar to block parties and in tandem with improved use of existing infrastructure, what if we shut down lanes for hours to give priority to communities? What if, instead of the long idling pick up lines, we prioiritized parking at a distance, then walking the rest (for parents and children)? More exercise, more time for connection. If one cannot walk, then an equitable time and space different abilities.

Bryana Breathes Design LLC Synthesis #1 Inspired by plants This week I planted potatoes with my kids, I harvested more broccoli and it’s leaves, I watered my marjoram, basil, and rosemary. I also planted carrots. I checked on my tulips and garlic. They are happily tucked away. I’m waiting for some more potatoes, my fancy Certified Organic Yukon Gold potatoes to develop better eyes before I make a new organic bed to plant them in. Some of my seedlings (the herbs) are struggling with the light...
